Standing Grappling Techniques

Remarks

1. Controlling the opponent's upper body in preparation for a takedown. Or to deliver powerful close range strikes like elbows and knees.

2. Sometimes called the "Clinch," it's the transition from striking to grappling proper, the middle range.

3. Not a good idea to get tangled up in a street fight. Especially with a bigger/stronger opponent. But there is definitely a place for standing grappling. In a competition, with an opponent of equal size. Bouncing, Law Enforcement, "Drunk Uncle." Often you'll end up in the clinch whether you like it or not.

4. Always strike before grabbing. "Soften" the opponent up. Most people aren't just going to let you walk up and grab them. Stun the guy first with 2-5 shots.

5. Economy of motion. It's better to grab with the hand opposite of the last strike. For instance, after a 3 punch combo, right, left, right, I should grab with my left. Just like it was another strike. But then again, use whatever works, just hit and grab.
